Invokana - Side effects, FDA Warnings, Drug interactions & Lawsuits

INVOKANA

This is an oral diabetes drug that controls the blood sugar levels in the patient and it helps the kidneys remove glucose from the blood. The lawsuit against this drug states that the manufacturers did not give the patients and physicians enough warning that the drug can causes kidney failure, sexual function problem, and also loss of limbs.

What is an Invokana?

Invokana is a canagliflozin which is a SGLT2 inhibitor, i.e. it is a type of drug that helps in the lowering of the blood glucose levels in those individuals who suffer from diabetes. The FDA approved this drug in March 2013, this was the first drug in its class. This works by allowing higher amounts of sugar to be excreted out in the urine. Although it is a very useful drug when it comes to lowering blood sugar levels it is known to have severe side effects that include cardiovascular diseases, diabetic ketoacidosis and other kidney health issues. There have also been certain studies that have linked the use of this drug to an increased risk of amputation of limbs.
Some individuals had such severe side effects that they needed to be hospitalized whereas others were permanently disabilitated.
Due to these reasons those individuals who suffered the ill effects of this drug decided to file lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals along with its parent company Johnson & Johnson for failing to provide the appropriate warning to the consumers and doctors about these risks.
